The World Commission on Dams was born from this debate. Established in February through an unprecedented process of dialogue and negotiation involving representatives of the public, private and civil society sectors, it began work in May of that year. Sterkfontein Dam is the only South African dam in the ICOLD Register of the World's Largest Dams on account of this characteristic.
